I’ve been preparing the last couple of weeks for the Artists and Craftsman’s Show this coming Saturday (11/23/2013) in Mount Pleasant, and I’ve had a bunch of work printed for samples, stock and display. I don’t do a lot of shows and I do not want a high amount of inventory. I also do not want to put a lot of money into prints that I may have to hold onto for a while. How do you decide how much to print and where to get it printed?
This is a really tough question and for me it’s a balancing act. I need to have enough product to show and tell and sell. I also know that it will be unlikely that I will sell everything. I primarily use BayPhoto (bayphoto.com) for all my printing needs and they have always been fantastic. The only downside to them is print time and shipping time. I’ve had orders take almost two weeks and that makes me sweat more than I’d like. For that reason I considered WHCC which has 2 day shipping on everything. I really like BayPhoto’s prints so I decided to get everything ready well in advance and I placed my order early. I have received everything and am in the process of framing and organizing now. I decided to get small samples of a set of 26 images specifically tailored for this event. Then I have a bunch of medium sized pieces some of which I will frame and then a couple of large pieces. Printing with BayPhoto allows me to get everything mounted, and then I can quickly add them to the custom frames.
I also had a friend John MacLean of John MacLean Photography recently start a printing service in sizes all the way up to 40″ x 60″ using an Epson 9900 printer on Red River paper. I couldn’t pass up getting a print on Red River so I have one on the way for the show. This image below was the one I selected to be printed by John. I’m excited to see what it looks like.
