Glorious golden morning light bathed the water, marsh and lighthouse as the sun rose into the sky. I had met up with Athena for an sunrise shoot at the Bodie Island Lighthouse. Sunrise was spectacular and the light was perfect to pick out the vibrant greens of the mid summer marshes. Everything popped as if newly awakened before our very eyes.

This is the third iteration of the Bodie Island Lighthouse; the first was abandoned due to a poor foundation and the second was destroyed by Confederate troops. This one built in 1872 remained manned until 1940.

However the most interesting thing about this lighthouse, is the pronunciation of “Bodie”. It isn’t with a long “o” that comes natural to most folks, but it traditionally is pronounced “body”. The stories told would have you believe that it’s because a number of dead sailors washed ashore here, which is known as the Graveyard of the Atlantic. Apparently the Body Family owned the land and “Bodies Island” was the original name.

I spent a wonderful day shooting the lighthouse and surrounding area with Athena and I can’t wait to go back to the area. There is a chance that next month that very well may happen.
