This was my favorite place from our whole trip. It was stunning camping right among the aspens. When we first got there no-one was in our campground and we were surprised because it was fully booked. After heading up to see Maroon Lake and accompanying mountains we headed back down to get something to eat and pack it in for the night. Once we were asleep all the other campers showed up and we felt a little bit better about camping that high up the mountains. I got up and left early the next morning hoping to get a spectacular light show for sunrise. However as the sun showed some life on the peaks much bigger clouds rolled in and quickly heavy rain chased everyone down the mountain and to breakfast.

I went back down to our camper and ate while it poured. It seemed to get colder and colder and I wondered if just maybe instead of rain there might be snow on the mountain peaks when I went back up. As we were heading on to our next campground, I packed up the camper in the rain and then headed back up to the lake. Indeed when I returned the mountains were snow covered and a few other stragglers and I were able to view them all to ourselves. The reflection of the golden aspens with the snowy peaks reflected in the calm lake was incredible. I hope you enjoy.
