“Sacred Ground”

Colorado is an incredible place to get lost in wilderness and incredible terrain. It’s an adventurers paradise, with just about something for everyone. As we were headed back from a two week whirlwind around the state, we stumbled upon this site just off the highway. We were road weary and this place looked like a Disney creation. The incredible snow capped Mt Meeker in the background and the lush fall colored trees and bushes was to be expected. But the rocky outcrop and the divine little chapel that seemed to grow out of the rocks seemed unbelievable. Like something out of a movie set. This spot lifted the soul, nourishing, and rebuilding. It was very welcomed as we prepared to head back East.

Water, beautiful sun rays, a Palm Tree, a Live Oak and Spanish Moss. This image includes everything I could hope to epitomize South Carolina and the Low Country. The late winter clear sky allowed for that gorgeous colorful glow on the horizon. This was before much new growth had occurred and the remaining cold that we get in the Low Country created dense fog on the water. I had to wait for the sun to come up this high in order to burn off most of the fog before I was able to capture the reflection cleanly. If you look closely you can still see some fog on the water.

Hurricane Sandy is still being felt in most of NJ and some of NY 4 months later. Here in the South we only experienced some dramatic weather changes and this sunset after the storm had passed was one of my most memorable. I only just barely made it out to the beach and didn’t see the sun going down. All the other beach-goers were packing up as I headed down to the water. The tidal waves were vicious in this spot which is normally very calm in this protected cove. I got wet a few times, quickly pulling my camera out of harms way. As the light started to fade I started to see some deep oranges on the horizon and I had a feeling it was going to be one of those special moments. I had no idea that the whole sky would turn this burnt orange. Reflected in the rushing waters I could only feel for the those North of us in the path of destruction.

“The Edge”
Canyonlands National Park, Utah

On our two week trip around Colorado and Utah the westernmost point we hit was Canyonlands National Park. The vastness and magnitude of the canyons, rock walls and valleys is something you just have to see. This is a small taste of the incredible vistas that are around every corner. On this morning smoke from a fire was starting to head our way and I knew this was probably the last day that I could capture it with any clarity. I left the camper really early driving in the star light over the 30 miles into the park and out to the Mesa Arch. Once I got there I saw about 7 other cars and hurried to gain a spot in the lineup. After initial shots of sunrise, shooting through the arch and down into the valley, I attempted a few more angles. This one I was laying on the rock as close to the edge as felt comfortable and shooting with a very wide angle.
