What better way to escape the heat and enjoy the outdoors than by heading to the highest elevation in the area. Tommy White and I scheduled a Landscape photography workshop on the Blue Ridge Parkway and I scheduled a family vacation shortly after to effectively get a chance to get away. Even though the beach is the place to be in the summer. Too much of it can be overwhelming. Here is a whole series of images that I took up in the mountains while “beating the heat”.
“Raging Falls”
Elk Falls, Elk Park, NC
A raging torrent of water cascades over the 45 foot falls and swirls in the pool below. +Tommy White and I were scouting Roan Mountain for our workshop last weekend and ended up stopping here on the way back. It was almost dark and we had to use headlamps to navigate the path to the falls. Once we got there, a fine spray of water covered everything and it’s amazing that we got any shots.
I ventured out onto a large rock protruding into the water and got lucky with the timing of this shot to capture the swirling waters and little whirlpool. Adventure seekers jump off the cliffs to the right and down into the waterfall. Due to the high volume of water and late hour we didn’t see another soul. There was so much water on this occasion that the falls and pool were far too dangerous for swimming.
