“Calm Before”

A brief interlude during the downpour as the sun peaks through. Only for a moment and then the storm is back.
For me this image is about the mood that is created by the clouds and water and the almost lack of color except for the sun. I also dig it’s simplicity and that’s why it’s among my top 12.

A Great Blue Heron stands resolutely waiting for a glimpse of it’s next meal.
On a warm muggy morning in mid Jun I headed out to the beach to capture the sunrise. There was an expectant energetic feeling in the air, and I could feel something magical. One of those days when it just feels great to be alive.
I was walking down the beach wading through pools of water and the streaming tide and came around some rocks almost running into this enormous Great Blue Heron. Usually I never see them on the beach. Off course I scared him into his loping flight and I tried to capture him flying low over the calm water. Due to the limit light, I had no luck capturing him in motion with my slow telephoto, but when he landed at the end of the next groin of rocks, I knew I could get something even better.
I waded way out chest deep in to the ocean lining up the bird with the rising sun. Then I got the tripod fully immersed in the relatively calm sea and proceeded to push it into the sandy mud as much I could to stabilize it. The heron patiently stood, slowly shifting feet.
